Bob,
I recall one year when Jack had at least one on site live auction per day every day from the first Monday after the trout season opened in May until July 3. I bought a LOT that summer! I still check out Luther's (almost) weekly auction online and then go on Monday to view lots and perhaps leave absentee bids.

Local auctions around here are mostly online ONLY. The days of spending an enjoyable day outside at an estate auction seem to be a thing of the past. Farm auctions with cattle and machinery still come up.

Although it costs a bit more for the item being installed, I've found that letting the plumber obtain the item (like a faucet) and having him do the work pays in the long run. Seems to me the plumber may have access to better quality parts than I. I do have the tools required but no longer have the flexibility or desire to do those jobs.

Julie,
I very, very seldom correct a seller because, in most cases, I think they're blowing smoke rather than making an honest mistake. If the seller can't tell the difference between EAPG and Baccarat, far be it from me to EDUMICATE him/her.

Unfortunately, now in Wisconsin and Minnesota, traffic killed deer are left at the side of the road for bald eagles, crows and other carrion eaters to consume. Apparently even with the high taxes in these 2 states, there were insufficient funds for road crews to remove them.

Anyone care to look at this Dugan Stippled Estate vase and help me with the color? The color in the auction photos is very close if not spot on - my camera doesn't do as well. Doty says Stippled Estate was made in Vaseline and that's what I think this is, although it's almost green enough for the "If it's green, it ain't Vaseline" saying.

Nancy,
Thanks for the additional pictures. I still don't know but the underside doesn't look quite right to me compared to a couple Webb custard vases with similarly shaped clear feet that I have. The last pictures look like there's less shading pink to yellow than the first. I'm puzzled - sorry I couldn't help more. You may want to compare the profile (especially how the vase portion transitions to the foot) to this auction:

NancyP,
Can you provide a photo of the underside of the foot on that two tone vase? The wavy base looks like something Webb is known for - but perhaps someone reproduced it. A photo of the bottom would help to tell whether it's glossy Webb Burmese or something else.

This 10 3/4" tall, 3 3'8" base diameter carnival glass vase has great iridescence. I believe it's Fenton's April Showers. The last picture shows it toward the outdoors, looking from the top through the base. It's a very, very light amethyst. Did Fenton make a lavender or is this just a weakly colored amethyst?

Too late to take a picture but I'm sure you can ID this from just a description - a somewhat square bowl with a major diameter of 7 1/2" having attached candle holders on extended arms at the sides. Distance across candle holders is 10 3/4". Bowl is iridized marigold, arms and holders left clear. Exterior bottom is embossed PAT / APPLIED / FOR.

Shelly,
Egyptian cotton is made from two varieties of cotton plants, originally from America. It has the longest staple length of any cotton so it has higher strength than other variety cotton yarns of the same diameter. That allows smaller diameter cotton yarns to be used in sheeting resulting in a smoother feel. Well Made Egyptian cotton sheets not only feel smoother but last much longer than Pima - AKA Supima - cotton or sheets which just say 100% cotton (those are made from American Upland cotton). The reason the cotton is called Egyptian cotton is because that's where most of it is grown as that country has the ideal climate for it.

After an overnight low of 18 below zero, it's warmed up to 5 above so will snow. Back down to 17 below Saturday and Sunday night. Highs in the 20's late next week - normal highs are upper 30's.
-
Wes,
Still 9 above here but headed to a low of -14 - wind chills -35. Need to venture about 90 miles northwest of here to pick up some items I won on an online auction - I don't expect it will be warmer there. Had the guy who plows our driveway here today to shovel snow off the roof as we don't need any ice dams. Looks like it won't be until next Thursday for us to get up to 20 above. No mosquitoes, though.....

No storms here, perhaps an inch or so of snow tomorrow and warming up after that. I even heard a forecast of 40 degrees for next Wednesday - Thursday. Always nice when spring comes and the sweet young things discard their Nanook of the North outerware.
-
It looks like we're going to break our string of consecutive below zero days at 17. So far this season we've had 42 days of below zero temps. Our first day of those temps was December 7, so that means about 63% of the days since then have been "chilly". Long range forecast is to get highs above freezing next week. Time to break out the shorts.

I believe it IS MW – looks like one of their shapes and they did a fair number of bird designs – usually game birds but not always. Could have also been a mustard. At any rate, I’m pretty sure it didn’t originally have the small end of an egg oval shaped metal shaker end. (And my opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.)

It's an Amana AMV9. I don't know if it's worth it just for energy savings but we needed a new furnace about 3 years ago and I decided to go with an energy efficient model. In addition to the energy savings, there were some pretty good tax incentives - I don't know whether those are still in effect. Your tax adviser should know.

It's warmed up to minus 12 now but was minus 23 two hours ago. May make it all the way up to zero this afternoon. It's bright and sunny but we have most of our drapes closed as extra insulation. Even triple thermopanes feel cold to the touch! I'm glad we have natural gas lines here and put in an ultra efficient furnace three years ago. Our gas bill is under $500 a year and that includes kitchen range, water heater and clothes dryer as well as heating a 3000 square foot house.

It's currently at -13 with a forecast high of -5. I liked Maxine's take on the cold on yesterday's daily calendar... She said she's figured out how to beat the cold. The secret is to dress in enough layers so that you can't make it through the door to go outside.

Around here, there are fewer and fewer booths with glass, porcelain, pottery and similar smalls because that just isn’t selling. Many of those booths are now selling costume jewelry from the 50’s and later. When I started in the 60’s, most shops were one person affairs, many with a room (or 3 or 4) in their home for selling. It was a much more personal experience then – and one where the oldtime dealers were more than happy to help young people learn more about what they were dealing or collecting.

You have it in the American Bisque pottery category. I would put it in the Glass- Glassware – EAPG – Ruby Stained category. I don't think you can change the category once it's listed - you may have to cancel the auction and redo it. I would then use Platinum Stained in the title and description. Perhaps Sue would comment on whether she thinks that’s a good idea.

Interesting. I first heard of Westlake from a guy who was one of his customers in the 1970's. Westlake apparently never knew about the copper sulfate as he insisted it took him several years and many trials to come up with the ruby stain. Either that or he was a snake oil salesman type.

I'm not certain how late in life Westlake continued his business, but it was into the 1970's. I was surprised I couldn't find more about his company.

You can stop the auctions – reason being there was an error in the listing. Then you can relist with correct shipping.
http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?EndingMyAuction
I THINK ebay automatically cancels all bids before they let you close it but if they don’t, you’ll need to cancel all bids first:
http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?CancelBidShow
Using that, you’d have to cancel each bid separately if eBay doesn’t do it with the cancel auction procedure.

Regarding herds of deer - they usually don't gather together in large groups until later in the winter around here although in one hunting season in Wisconsin (about November 24, 1977 or so), I had a group of well over 50 go past me - I actually heard them coming before I could see them. They were too far away for chancing a shot - or for seeing antlers - so I just enjoyed the sight. And that was always the best part of hunting for me anyway.

Just glanced up and saw a HUGE buck sauntering across our back yard. Unfortunately, he was entering the woods by the time I got my camera. I knew we'd had visiting deer overnight as our heated bird bath was empty this morning. We've often seen a doe or her 2 fawns this year but this is the first time we've seen "Daddy". The gun hunting season opened last Saturday, so maybe he's staying out of the woods. You're not going to believe this but the doe just followed in his same path while I was typing. Perhaps the rut has started.

Shelly,
I recently sold an item to Japan and was able to send an invoice and handle the entire shipping myself with no problem. Did you sign up for eBay's Global Shipping Program?

Carma,
My father had a small Jersey herd when I was growing up and I fondly remember the great milk with high butterfat content. My parents always had plenty of thick cream for their coffee and oh my goodness did that make wonderful whipped cream for desserts. They are such pretty, docile creatures and they were almost like pets. We had to make sure we kept the young heifers close to home in the fall as they could be mistaken for deer by some trigger happy hunters. We never did make our own butter but I can only imagine how good it is.

Question for CARMA or anyone who can help me on carnival or iridized glass. I picked up this 3" diameter, 2 3/4" high covered powder jar. The pattern on the sides reminds me of the Pepper Plant compotes with a Greek Key type design above. The bottom has a 48 rayed starburst design. I'm not familiar with thee pattern and would appreciate help IDing it. I checked Doty's European carnival and didn't find it.

Carma,
Thank you!! I'd guess with luck maybe 25% of BV's. They're the sort of items that would probably do better on a farm auction around here.

Good morning, all. Anyone know who made this 8 3/4” tall miniature lamp, probably calla lily pattern? It was goofus painted but much of that is gone.

Another question – does anyone have a BV or current value of Diamond Glass Company’s fan pattern creamer and covered butter in blue? The following site refers to the butter as ”extremely rare.”

Good evening, all. This vase was made of clear glass with the background acid treated and the florals left as is. It has a 3 1/4" base diameter, stands 6" tall and the body has a four lobed shape. The top is ground and polished and has a hexagonal shape 2 1/4" X 4". I believe it was blown into a mold. Anyone know what type of flower, who made the vase and when?

Bob,
That's a fairly frequently seen subject for prints - check here for a closed auction on a similar one:

Gail Mac,
Your creamer is a pattern usually called Ellrose. See here for an example:
http://www.patternglass.com/Store/Creamers/
There were 2 closed auctions which were titled Amber stained Ellrose creamer but neither had a picture so I'm not sure if that's what they really had. One went for about $15.50 and the other had no bids with a $12 start.

Shelly,
No, I didn't bid and happy I didn't - carnival has fallen so far that I'd probably have a tough time making anything on it. It's a whole new world out there and thankfully I've learned that what was once valuable no longer is.

I really felt like bidding on this as I'd sold an identical set for $550+ 8 years ago on eBay. Just another example of how badly mid-level carnival glass prices have fallen.

Gail,
Thank you for that info. The example of Beads and Bulges shown in Lechners' book is in "Pigeon Blood", making me think Consolidated was the maker. Sounds like Gougeon is correcting his correction?

Gail,
Lechners state (page 41, World of Salt Shakers, 2nd ed) that Beads and Bulges was made by Consolidated ca. 1894-1900. Is that in error?

Shelly,
Is this what you're talking about?

I was at the show at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds yesterday and not surprised to see fewer dealers of good glass, porcelain, etc. There were a couple big banners STEAMPUNK HERE!! that I managed to avoid. The only good thing about that movement is they'll probably never use CFL bulbs in their lighting.

Good morning, all. Anyone know who made this 13" tall green pitcher, enameled decoration and vertical optic panels? I was thinking Northwood but would like confirmation or correction.

Gail,
Typically the terms are used interchangeably on things I’m familiar with but maybe not for elegant glass. Here’s an AD cup for sale with the dimensions:
