I watched the monks making this gorgeous sand Mandala at one of the Monasteries I visited.. Sand mandalas originate from an ancient Tibetan Buddhist custom, signifies the human journey from ignorance to Buddhahood and is used as a tool to help monks in meditation and to symbolize the concepts of impermanence, wisdom, compassion, loving-kindness and inner peace, It takes days/weeks to complete, using grains of coloured sand, much concentration and patience to create such intricate detail. Once it is completed, a ceremony is held followed by it's destruction .The destruction signifies the law of impermanence. That nothing lasts forever, and everything is in constant change.
