@abzoid : The term "Banana Bowl" is a relatively modern term coined by collectors in the 1950's-1960's. I've yet to see any such shape being called such in the old circa 1900 ads. They were usually just called "large oval fruit bowls" in the old ads. Outside of a few major port cities, mostly in the south, bananas were not a widely available item back then. The vast majority of the people outside of major port cities had never even actually seen one, much less eaten one. Without modern refrigeration and rapid transportation methods, that was pretty much the case with any tropical fruits. They just were not available to the masses then. The fruit served in fruit bowls back then was mostly what could be grown locally: Apples, Pears, Peaches, Berries etc.......and even then, only when they were in season. It's something we take for granted today, but 100-110 years ago, fresh fruit was a luxury & not widely available.
